📚 3 Teaching Tips That Still Work After 20 Years

Jul 12, 2025

👴 When I first started teaching, I used to roll my eyes at veteran teachers who said,

“This training? Same thing we heard 10 years ago.”
Now I am that veteran teacher… and guess what?
They were right. A lot of things just come back repackaged.

But here’s what doesn’t change:
Some classroom strategies work no matter the year, grade, or curriculum.

Here are 3 that still make a huge difference:

🧩 1. Chunk Your Lessons

Don’t teach in one long stretch! Break lessons into 10–15 minute chunks:

  • Start with a quick question 🧠

  • Read a short passage 📖

  • Answer a few questions ✍️

  • End with discussion 🗣️

This keeps students focused and helps them absorb more.

⏱️ 2. Use a Timer

A visible countdown adds urgency.
Example:

“You have 10 minutes to finish these definitions. Go!”
Students stay on task when they see the clock ticking.

✅ 3. Give Instant Feedback

At the end of class, have students tally their points and see their grade.
💡 It builds motivation and shows their hard work matters.

🎯 When you chunk lessons, add timers, and give quick feedback, you’ll see students improve — no matter how “old” the strategy is.
