Building Relationships: It Starts with Classroom Management

Mar 29, 2025

Many administrators suggest that teachers need to focus on building relationships with students, but I believe that this is a backwards approach. Strong relationships grow out of effective classroom management.

  • Create a Safe Space: The first step is to create a classroom environment that is consistent, safe, supportive, and predictable. Many students crave the stability that a well-managed classroom provides, especially if they are dealing with chaotic situations outside of school. When students feel safe and know what to expect, they can relax and be themselves.
  • Introduce Shared Experiences: Once the classroom environment is well-managed, teachers can then introduce shared experiences. This can be something as simple as taking notes on a specific day or doing a special project. The key is that the students are doing it together. These shared experiences help students to bond.
  • Show Genuine Interest: When students feel comfortable, they are more likely to open up. This is when a teacher's genuine interest in their students becomes crucial. When teachers go beyond the curriculum to connect with their students, it strengthens the relationships and builds a positive classroom culture.

Ultimately, focusing on classroom management, providing shared experiences, and showing genuine interest will create a classroom where students feel safe, supported, and connected.
