🧑‍🏫 Emergency Lesson Plans That Actually Work (and Prevent Chaos!)

Dec 13, 2025

Every teacher knows the panic of waking up sick 😷 or getting that last-minute call saying you can’t make it to school. You rush to throw together lesson plans and hope your classroom doesn’t look like a tornado hit it when you return. 🌪️

Here’s the truth — emergency lesson plans don’t have to lead to chaos. You just need the right system in place. 💪

After 21 years in the classroom, here are my 3 must-haves for sub-proof, stress-free plans 👇

1️⃣ Clear Directions – Write easy-to-follow instructions for your substitute. Keep it short, clear, and simple so they know exactly what to do. 📝
2️⃣ An Updated Seating Chart – Make sure every student’s name and seat are labeled. This helps the sub keep order and note behavior. 🪑
3️⃣ A Hands-Off Assignment – Choose a task students can do on their own, like watching a short video and answering questions. It keeps things quiet and productive. 🎥

When you plan ahead with these three things, your classroom runs smoothly — even when you’re not there. ✅

Because being prepared isn’t just smart — it’s what keeps your classroom calm, even when life isn’t. 🌟
