🚪 How I Start My Class Every Day

Sep 13, 2025

If you want strong classroom management, it begins with how you start class. The first few minutes set the tone for the entire period.

👋 Be Present at the Door
I greet students as they walk in. This lets me see what’s happening both inside and outside the classroom. If a student comes in full of energy or still using electronics, I can settle things right away.

📵 No Electronics
At my school, phones and earbuds must be put away. Students drop their backpacks in a taped-off area so they aren’t distracted.

📝 Warm-Ups and Clear Expectations
We spend the first week practicing what to do when class begins. I post a warm-up on the board, and students know exactly what’s expected. I even add a timer ⏱️—about 8 minutes—to keep them focused and moving quickly.

Why This Works

  • Students like predictability.

  • I gain time to take attendance, handle supplies, or check in with students.

  • The class starts calm and organized instead of chaotic.

🌟 Final Tip
When you dial in those first minutes, the rest of class runs smoother. If you don’t, you’ll spend the whole period putting out fires. Start strong, and the rest will follow!
