TRUMP Takes On Education Department, What's NEXT For Teachers?
Apr 26, 2025I am no expert but just an 8th grade in Southern California. Regardless I have been teaching for over 20 years and maybe some insight to help understand Trump's latest move. Here is how I see it:
- The national group for schools, called the Department of Education, might see some big changes. While the President can't completely get rid of it without Congress, they can change how it works by cutting jobs and programs.
- It's important to remember that each state is mostly in charge of its own schools and what students learn. This means that what is taught can be different in different states.
- The national government gives states some money for their schools, about 15% in many cases.
- There's a possibility that the national government might connect this money to certain things that states need to do.
- If a state like California has different ideas about education than the President, they might not agree with these new requirements.
- If states don't agree, they might get less money for their schools. This could lead to changes like having fewer teachers and bigger class sizes.
- Programs that help students with special needs might also be managed by different groups in the future.
These are some potential shifts in how education might work, keeping in mind that states have a big role in what happens in their own schools.
